When dealing with hundreds of meters of edging on a bush block, material costs can skyrocket. While Corten (Weathering Steel) is the industry standard for a rustic look, we worked with Turf And Tools to find a budget-friendly solution without sacrificing longevity: 6mm Mild Steel.
Why This Works: The Science of Thickness
- The “Slow Rust” Factor: While thin mild steel might eventually corrode through, 6mm is a massive slab of steel.
- Longevity: At this heavy-duty thickness, the rate of corrosion is so slow that it would take decades—potentially a lifetime—to compromise the structure.
- Aesthetic: Within weeks, the silver steel begins to weather into a deep, rich brown that is slightly earthier than Corten, perfectly suiting the natural bush palette.

Because they chose mild steel, the team could easily weld the lengths together using backing plates to keep long runs dead straight. After grinding the welds flat, the edging looks like one continuous, fluid ribbon of steel winding through the trees.
